A Cross-Linguistic Pressure for Uniform Information Density in Word Order

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract While natural languages differ widely in both canonical word order and flexibility, their orders still follow shared cross-linguistic statistical patterns, often attributed to functional pressures. In the effort identify these pressures, prior work has compared real counterfactual orders. Yet one pressure been overlooked such investigations: The uniform information density (UID) hypothesis, which holds that should be spread evenly throughout an utterance. Here, we ask whether a for UID may have influenced patterns cross-linguistically. To this end, use computational models test lead greater uniformity than our empirical study of 10 typologically diverse languages, find that: (i) among SVO consistently reverse orders, (ii) only linguistically implausible exceed These findings are compatible with development usage languages.1

Word frequency cues word order in adults: cross-linguistic evidence

One universal feature of human languages is the division between grammatical functors and content words. From a learnability point of view, functors might provide entry points or anchors into the syntactic structure of utterances due to their high frequency. Despite its potentially universal scope, this hypothesis has not yet been tested on typologically different languages and on populations o...

Bootstrapping word order in prelexical infants: a Japanese-Italian cross-linguistic study.

Learning word order is one of the earliest feats infants accomplish during language acquisition [Brown, R. (1973). A first language: The early stages, Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press.]. Two theories have been proposed to account for this fact. Constructivist/lexicalist theories [Tomasello, M. (2000). Do young children have adult syntactic competence? Cognition, 74(3), 209-253.] argue th...

Cross Linguistic Transfer in Word Order: Evidence from L1 Forgetting and L2 Acquisition

The purpose of the present study was to bring together the evidence on possible cross-linguistic transfer in word order from two different perspectives: a transfer as an apparent obstacle in second language acquisition, and a transfer as a cause of attrition of the native language. The relationship between the same two languages in a contact situation was investigated. Since the majority of stu...

Why are some word orders more common than others? A uniform information density account

Languages vary widely in many ways, including their canonical word order. A basic aspect of the observed variation is the fact that some word orders are much more common than others. Although this regularity has been recognized for some time, it has not been well-explained. In this paper we offer an informationtheoretic explanation for the observed word-order distribution across languages, base...
